Cracking timbers of nostalgia just dawned on me! You can’t go wrong spending money on experiences. Spend a night at this serene ecotourism destination. Stargaze, and admire the nocturnal creatures like bats, owls, and fireflies… All will keep you fortified and alive.
The mona monkeys at Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary are just too friendly. Be careful even though they don’t bite or scratch. For these monkeys, a banana is manna. Get a bunch of bananas and get the monkeys all over you. Friendship is over if you run out of bananas. At their discretion, insects are a favorite for the monkeys too.
The Tafi community holds the firm belief that the monkeys represent their ancestors. The monkeys served as messengers to the forefathers when they migrated from Assin to their current settlement.
It is however forbidden to kill a monkey. The people believe that misfortune awaits anyone who kills any monkey. Subtly, bylaws are also enforced to prevent poachers from encroaching.
What is more, is how rare it is to come across a dead monkey. They quickly arrange funerals for a departed member deep in the jungle amidst silent dirges and sorrows. During the few minutes of burial, give the bereaved monkeys some bananas and it would be rejected.
These primates don’t have territorial boundaries but fight over their current habitation area. Given its growing population, more troops are formed with each family headed by the alpha male known as “Commando” or call it “Kakagbla” in the local dialect.
Just like a kangaroo, the infant monkey is carried in the mother’s pouch while practicing its first steps. Meanwhile, February is identified as the breeding season for the monkeys here.
The experience at this cultural village make quite a duo. Apart from the monkey walk, the way of life here at Tafi is traditional. The food, the dialect, and the hospitality are worth immersing.
The double treat is best experienced by overnight guests. There’s a cultural display of music and dance coupled with old fables around bonfires at night. The fables are narrated by a visually impaired oldie who will almost always conclude with moral lessons. What a treat!
If you are a cultural vacationer, then Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary offers such serene traditional adventures. The tradition sees the natives of Tafi lifting a helping hand to the stranger which makes the place home away from home.
