Aburi Botanical Gardens, Waterfalls & Cocoa Farms Tour.
Overview:
Embark on a half-day journey from Accra to discover the natural marvels and cultural treasures of Aburi, nestled atop the serene hills in the Eastern region of Ghana. A 45-minute drive from Accra, along the peak of winding hill roads, will usher you into Aburi. This peaceful community affords a soothing ambiance for mindfulness and romance adventures. The Eastern Region is home to various ethnic groups, including the Akuapem, Akyem, Kwahu, Krobo, and Guans, each with its unique language and cultural traditions. In Aburi, the people are descendants of the Akwamu (Akan) and predominantly speak Twi. The name “Aburi” is a modified version of “Abude”, attributed to European missionaries and traders during colonial times. Located northeast of Accra, Aburi boasts a cooler climate due to its higher altitude compared to neighboring areas like Accra. A visit to the Aburi Botanical Gardens, a craft village, Oboadaka waterfalls, and the historic Tetteh Quarshie cocoa farms offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Itinerary:
Departure from Accra in an air-conditioning vehicle after your breakfast in your hotel restaurant. Enjoy a scenic drive through the winding mountain road and arrive in this homey Aburi community.
Aburi Botanical Gardens:
At Aburi Botanical Gardens, visitors are enveloped in a serene oasis of lush greenery and vibrant blooms. As visitors stroll through the garden’s winding trails, they encounter a diverse array of native and exotic tree species. Towering palm and African mahogany trees cast dappled shadows over the pathway, while delicate orchids cling to the branches overhead. Palms of various species sway gently in the breeze, their fronds rustling softly. Throughout the garden, visitors can learn about the importance of conservation and biodiversity. Guided tours offer further insight into the garden’s rich botanic heritage, and ecological significance, making it a truly educational experience for nature enthusiasts of all ages.
Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm:
The next stop is the Tetteh Quarshie cocoa farm in Akuapim-Mampong, situated in Ghana’s Eastern Region. Established in 1879 by Tetteh Quarshie, this farm holds the distinction of being Ghana’s first commercial cocoa plantation. Tetteh Quarshie, a skilled blacksmith by trade, ventured to Fernando Po (modern-day Equatorial Guinea) in 1870 as part of a work contract with the Basel Missionaries. Upon his return, in 1879, he introduced cocoa to Ghana, marking the beginning of the country’s cocoa industry. While there are speculations surrounding how Quarshie acquired the cocoa beans, including myths of smuggling by swallowing (body-packing), the farm stands as a testament to his legacy. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness two of the original cocoa trees, now over 145 years old, still bearing fruit.
Oboadaka Waterfall:
Route downhill along the scenic landscapes and arrive at Oboadaka – a 20-minute car ride from the Aburi Botanical Gardens. Songbirds, distinct signature pine smells, and the splashing sound of the towering waterfall provide a happy balance of welcome and restoration. Adorned with thick green foliage, and a series of steep drops over a few rock steps, Oboadaka waterfall is estimated to have a height of about 623ft above ground level. With a little panting breath along the stairways, you descend at a slow pace to the plunge pool and enjoy a personal touch with the wonders of nature.
